Faverges
Welcome to Faverges, a town of 6 500 inhabitants,
situated between Annecy and Albertville,
in the Regional Nature Reserve of the Bauges Massif, on the border between Haute-Savoie and Savoie.
Nature, mountains, lake, torrents, archaeological sites, museums combine with many services provided by the town to its inhabitants and visitors, to make Faverges a much appreciated place of residence, leisure or work in all seasons.
Since the 13th century, the history of Giez has been tied to that of the Villette family, who have owned the Castle of Giez since 1204 and are still the owners to day.
In the 17th century, the Baroness of Villette also bought the tilt hammer that had contributed so much to the local economy and was falling to ruins.
In those days, metalwork was a common activity in the village and the tilt hammer provided ploughs and farming equipment after the Revolution. The steel mill, built in 1815, melted down ore and provided cast iron intended for manufacturing small objects. A factory adjoining the mill manufactured "cooking utensils", cauldrons, pans, etc…
Textile was also important in the area thanks to a taffetas factory set up during the 18th century that employed 50 workers and produced an average of 600 taffetas pieces per year.
